Ve­hic­u­lar ac­ci­dents in Trinidad are ris­ing at a ridicu­lous rate be­cause of the in­creas­ing num­ber of ir­re­spon­si­ble dri­vers on the roads. And noth­ing is be­ing done about this. What are we to do? Are we to lock our­selves in our hous­es for fear some un­car­ing dri­ver in his speed­ing ma­chine mows us down? It is not right that in­no­cent peo­ple should be los­ing their lives.

Every­day there are ac­ci­dents oc­cur­ring on our roads and they have now seem­ing­ly re­placed crime as the main killer of peo­ple in this coun­try. I live along the Lit­tle Co­ra Road in Cu­mu­to, which is now la­belled as the "by­pass to San­gre Grande" and it is shock­ing to wit­ness the alarm­ing rate at which mo­torists dri­ve on this road.

Cu­mu­to is a coun­try area and many dri­vers, in avoid­ing the traf­fic on the Va­len­cia stretch, di­vert to this road at the same speed they trav­el on the stretch. This is a very nar­row road. These reck­less dri­vers pose a clear dan­ger to chil­dren play­ing in their yards and to oth­ers who use this road.

I have lived here for 29 years and have not seen ve­hic­u­lar ac­ci­dents tak­ing place un­til now. We do not need that kind of reck­less dri­ving on such a small, nar­row road. It has be­come al­most a death trap. I hope some­one can take charge and put mea­sures in place to pre­vent reck­less dri­ving. To leave things as they are means more in­no­cent peo­ple are go­ing to lose their lives. Who will be the next bowl­ing pins to be knocked down?
