Vehicular accidents in Trinidad are rising at a ridiculous rate because of the increasing number of irresponsible drivers on the roads. And nothing is being done about this. What are we to do? Are we to lock ourselves in our houses for fear some uncaring driver in his speeding machine mows us down? It is not right that innocent people should be losing their lives.
Everyday there are accidents occurring on our roads and they have now seemingly replaced crime as the main killer of people in this country. I live along the Little Cora Road in Cumuto, which is now labelled as the "bypass to Sangre Grande" and it is shocking to witness the alarming rate at which motorists drive on this road.
Cumuto is a country area and many drivers, in avoiding the traffic on the Valencia stretch, divert to this road at the same speed they travel on the stretch. This is a very narrow road. These reckless drivers pose a clear danger to children playing in their yards and to others who use this road.
I have lived here for 29 years and have not seen vehicular accidents taking place until now. We do not need that kind of reckless driving on such a small, narrow road. It has become almost a death trap. I hope someone can take charge and put measures in place to prevent reckless driving. To leave things as they are means more innocent people are going to lose their lives. Who will be the next bowling pins to be knocked down?
