Discouraged by Verna’s dismissal

It is a pity that the Government has decided to discontinue the progressive work that Verna St Rose-Greaves had been doing regarding the national gender policy. As a woman and a teacher I am very much discouraged by her dismissal. I feel as though the powers-that-be believe that in order to rise they must step on the rights of others.

It is ironic that the University of the West Indies is conducting an adolescent suicide prevention training seminar next week, while the Government has sent young gay people the message with Verna’s dismissal that they are not equal citizens. She was the only minister who offered her vocal support for interventions against bullying in schools, which I witness on a daily basis. I cannot help but wonder if as a society we have agreed that these youth are disposable.
