Disgusting and distasteful travesty at Grande Riviere

Tuesday was a bumper day in my mailbox about Grande Riviere. Are the authorities aware how the disaster was reported worldwide? Having lived here for seven years and witnessing on a daily basis the immaturity and stupidity of a vast percentage of the populace—from driving to the politics, from service without a smile to laziness and bobol—I can attest that T&T is a country that could only organise a “drunken rampage in a brewery,” save stray dogs and kill endangered species.

What a disgusting and distasteful travesty. How Dr Joth Singh and Terry Rondon could possibly express delight at the way this was handled is beyond words. Just send in a man with a bulldozer with absolutely no direction and total disregard for protected life—in the middle of the hatching season.

Was the Marine Biology Department at UWI consulted? Did the EMA meet with all the esteemed ECO Warriors and environmental groups to discuss how this could be handled? No proper strategy and no contingency has government written all over it.

Len Peters, chairman of the Grande Riviere Nature Tour Guide Association and his team do an admirable and excellent job during the nesting and hatching season. They are well informed, articulate and draw us in to this amazing world of the Leatherback turtle more, especially as Trinidad is one of the premier nesting spots. They must be as distraught as are we all.
