My commute to and from work in Port-of-Spain has been spectacularly short these past couple weeks. But I am haunted by the thought of pedestrians walking blocks between the one-way thoroughfares, shrivelling in the sun and soaking in the rain, just to get heretofore easily accessible transport. Last week a foreign co-worker shared an idea from his country that I think may work for us.
The major flaw of the innovation is that it puts members of the travelling public in a disadvantageous position if they are not heading in the direction of the street they're on. What about if on the Western Main Road, Tragarete Road and Ariapita Avenue just one lane going in the opposite direction was dedicated only to buses, maxis and registered taxis?
In that way, notwithstanding the free flows of traffic west or east, there would always be a public transport route heading in the opposite direction for the exclusive service of the travelling public. I would also ask Port-of-Spain South MP, Marlene Mc Donald, to consider this arrangement.
Rather than revert to the same-old, why not put heads together to come up with a solution that serves all classifications of people including those without private transportation and particularly the differently-abled, the old and children.
