A clear explanation was given, Al-Rawi
Is there a parliamentary school in T&T? Or a school for parliamentarians who don’t understand the written word? If yes, I think PNM Senator Faris Al-Rawi is a good candidate. I saw him on television and he kept repeating how he wants the Government to say why it decided to approve ex-gratia payments to Canadians Dwayne Gibbs and Jack Ewatski, Commissioner of Police and Deputy Commissioner, respectively, following their resignations. He kept carrying on that the public doesn’t know and the Government is sticking.
In the first place, an easy-to-read explanation was put out by Senator Ganga Singh, the acting Attorney General, last Tuesday evening. It was also on the television news and on the newspapers. And it said, very clearly, the decision on the ex-gratia payments was made for three reasons:
• After consideration of all relevant facts.
• In keeping with applicable industrial relations practice.
• In keeping with the highest standards of governance.
I think it’s the last reason which has Al-Rawi stumped, since when his team was batting it never quite displayed it was capable of that. It’s time our politicians understand that the elections are over, and that citizens like me are tired of their bickering.
