I write this letter to commend the attentiveness, professionalism and skill of the lifeguards at Maracas Bay. I, like many others, braved the grey skies and torrential downpours on the morning of Emancipation Day to venture to the beach. The sea was not terribly rough but there were quite a few waves about 1-1.5 metres overhead. I swam out a bit but only upon return did I notice two boys who were also quite far out. Both looked a bit disoriented as they drifted further out to sea. Within seconds of witnessing the scene, three lifeguards came barrelling out to rescue them. Apparently, both boys were being dragged out to sea by a strong current. The lifeguards got to them and led them safely back to shore. Again, I commend the lifeguards and the two nearby swimmers who tried to assist the boys in distress.
