I write this let­ter to com­mend the at­ten­tive­ness, pro­fes­sion­al­ism and skill of the life­guards at Mara­cas Bay. I, like many oth­ers, braved the grey skies and tor­ren­tial down­pours on the morn­ing of Eman­ci­pa­tion Day to ven­ture to the beach. The sea was not ter­ri­bly rough but there were quite a few waves about 1-1.5 me­tres over­head. I swam out a bit but on­ly up­on re­turn did I no­tice two boys who were al­so quite far out. Both looked a bit dis­ori­ent­ed as they drift­ed fur­ther out to sea. With­in sec­onds of wit­ness­ing the scene, three life­guards came bar­relling out to res­cue them. Ap­par­ent­ly, both boys were be­ing dragged out to sea by a strong cur­rent. The life­guards got to them and led them safe­ly back to shore. Again, I com­mend the life­guards and the two near­by swim­mers who tried to as­sist the boys in dis­tress.
