ANR Robinson was part of the government of this country's first prime minister, Dr Eric Williams. He parted ways and was very pivotal in the politics of Tobago. He then became Prime Minister of T&T, also occupying that position at the time of the 1990 coup attempt. His support after the 17-17-2 election result caused Basdeo Panday to become the first Indo-Trinidadian prime minister, and as president he also removed Panday and appointed Patrick Manning as prime minister once more. Whether he had an impact on the victory of the present government is anybody's guess. Arthur Napoleon Raymond Robinson is by far the most influential person in this country over the last 50 years.
