Removal of the traffic plan a backward step

Why is it that every time we take a step forward, we also take three backward? The removal of the traffic plan for both St James and Woodbrook is one such move. Yes, the plan had problems, but these could have been adjusted and adjusted again until it ran smoothly. Years ago when there was a plan to make the Queen’s Park Savannah one-way traffic, there were similar outcries but the authorities of the day stuck to the plan; and today it’s accepted and it works. The fact is Trinis don’t like change. They only like to talk about it.

The arguments for the removal of the Western area traffic plan aren’t very convincing as time will tell. It was said that business was down because shoppers had no place to park, although parking was allowed on both sides of the Western Main Road and Ariapita Avenue, between 9 am and 3 pm. I seem to recall, before the plan was introduced, only alternate parking was allowed. Now that the plan has been removed and we are “back to normal,” it’s just a matter of time before we hear that business is still down, as is the norm in all parts of the country. Traffic jams heading in both directions. Double parking is back; and taxi drivers making U-turns all over the road.
