Mature governance in action
While some lay the blame of the contentious issues with the Indictable Offences Act solely at the feet of the PP government, the process by which an Act is proclaimed must be appreciated. It required both houses, as well as both sides of these houses, to agree to its proclamation. Hence each and everyone in the Parliament of Trinidad and Tobago had a role to play in this becoming an Act. Such is the tremendous responsibility of occupying a seat in this august chamber.
So, after having reached this point, and realising that there may be issues with this law, it was refreshing to see that the government was prepared to revisit Parliament to have the Act amended and to have the contentious Section 34 repealed. This, I am sure, was by no means an easy decision to take since by doing so opens up to Government to a barrage of criticism and negative press. However, I am pleased to see that we are maturing as a nation, when we can state that “we might be making an error here, let fix this no matter what may be the consequences.” If we can adopt this attitude across the board, we would definitely be in a better position.
For too long we as a nation have been hoodwinked and taken for granted, and no one should forget how we were forced to believe that PM stood for Project Manager some time ago. It takes a strong character to act in this sagely manner, so well done to the Prime Minister and her government.
