Who duped you, Madam PM?
The nation woke up to the further, startling revelation that, not only did our Prime Minister misunderstand the implications of the, now repealed, Section 34 but that, by her own admission, she was “duped” into so doing (Guardian article: Secret prevents PM from taking action—Sunday 16, Sept 2012). The word ‘duped’, as Guardian readers are well aware, connotes the idea of being ‘tricked’ or ‘deceived’.
If the Guardian sources on this revelation are reliable—and they have not been denied at the time of writing—then this begs the following, crucial question: Duped by whom? The fact is someone attempted to rush this pernicious piece of legislation through parliament. She/he or they was/were also responsible, no doubt, for deceiving the PM on the matter and we have a right to know who it was. Who was/were the shady mastermind(s) behind this sordid, Section 34 affair? The PM must now go the full nine yards and clear the air on this. Exactly who misled you, Prime Minister, and is s/he or are they still in your employment or Cabinet?
