Sad day for T&T football

I read with great sadness that the Trinidad and Tobago football team may not compete at the 2012 Caribbean Cup. This is due to the refusal of the government to grant a request of under $500,000 so that the team could compete. This refusal is taking place even though much more monies are being spent on matters that are much less important. The minister of finance in his budget presentation last Monday spoke with eloquence with regard to sports and his intention to move with vigour to build on our success at the 2012 Summer Olympics. Yet mere days later we read of this development. One is left with no choice but to ask whether his statement was just ole talk.

In light of this development, I now make a plea to corporate Trinidad and Tobago, in particular those who always boast of hundreds of millions of dollars in after-tax profits, to come forward and sponsor this team so that they could compete at the sporting event. It will be very embarrassing should Trinidad and Tobago not compete at the Caribbean Cup when we have so much money changing hands in this country. Come on sponsors, $500,000 would not put a dent on your pockets, after all, you rode on the success of our Soca Warriors 2006, so now is an opportune time to give back.
