We the staff members of the Accident and Emergency Department, Mayaro District Health Facility would like to express heartfelt appreciation to our Chief Executive Officer Stacy Harricharan and board member Hafeez Ali for their display of concern for our safety. Over the past few years, there have been several incidents of gang wars in our department. Knives, cutlasses and even guns were brandished and staff and patients feared for their lives.
As a security measure, numerous requests were made for a metal gate to be installed on the corridor leading to our department to deter easy access and to ensure patient privacy. However, our demands fell on deaf ears and we were told that our facility would become an 'Alcatraz\' if this protective barrier was constructed.
Approximately two weeks ago, another episode of gang violence erupted. We were severely traumatised but grateful that no one was injured. However, a visit to our facility by Mr Ali proved to be most helpful. He displayed concern and understanding of our predicament
We can now work without fear as our workplace is now comfortable and safe. We not only acquired a gate, but security officers are now assigned to our department 24/7. We applaud the display of sincerity and genuine concern received from our leadership.
