On December 2, Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar spoke about issues of trust and divisions within the People's Partnership-coalition Government. The occasion was a UNC meeting at Rienzi Complex in Couva when Mrs Persad-Bissessar made some candid observations, publicly stating that it was not easy to be Prime Minister.''
The Prime Minister must never lose sight of the fact that she is head of a "partnership" government. All partnerships are susceptible to hiccups, especially political partnerships. The UNC, senior party of this partnership, must be prepared, if called upon or if the political climate has an adverse change nationally, to cut ties with the partners and go it alone.
This is strong and decisive leadership. To say publicly, for those within the partnership who think otherwise and would wish to go on their own, let me also confirm that the electorate will chew and spit out such individuals or political groups who are seen to be betraying the trust that has been placed in the partnership. This is political cowardice, the trust is placed in the hands of the leader to make timely decisions pertaining to the people's governance, and that decision may be for the UNC to go it alone because of the failure of the partnership.
