Please allow me tto express thanks on behalf of the Maritime Services Division of the Ministry of Transport for the fire services' prompt intervention in averting a potentially dangerous situation involving two of our employees recently. On December 21, during an electricity blackout in several areas of Port-of-Spain, two members of staff became trapped in the elevator of our newly occupied premises at Clarence House at the corner of Duke and St Vincent streets.
The fire services were called and within ten minutes a unit from the Wrightson Road Fire Station responded, along with an ambulance. Within minutes of their arrival, the officers of the Red Team were able to rescue the trapped duo and take them to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital for examination.
While on the premises, the officers rendered further assistance to other officials of the division by opening an electric garage gate to allow staff members to retrieve their vehicles.
The staff of the Maritime Services Division is extremely grateful for the timely response of the fire officers, and particularly for their efforts in rescuing the two trapped in the elevator. Further, I wish to recommend some form of recognition or commendation be given to Fire Officer Edwards from the Wrightson Road Fire Station for the yeoman service rendered in such a timely and efficient manner.
