In a letter to your newspaper, Mr Michael Williams (Guardian, February 8) says that I have suggested that "independent senators should resign to make way for President-elect Justice Anthony Carmona to make his own appointments..." I have made no such suggestion.
What I have said is that the Independent Senators should offer their resignations to the new President (not President-elect) and give him the opportunity to exercise his judgment; as Michael Williams must know, there is a difference between "resigning" and "offering to resign." Such an offer has been made in the past.
It caused no difficulty then, and ought not to cause any difficulty now. Whatever the Constitution may say about the length of these Senators' term of office, I consider it the proper thing to do.
