On Carnival Sunday evening with nothing much to do and having 12 family members and friends from abroad, some visiting for the first time, and not wanting to subject myself to the new Dimanche Gras format which I always felt would have failed, I decided to take everyone into the city for a safe walkabout seeing it was Carnival and lots of police around.
We ended up on South Quay, where we found a show about to take place–Traditional Kings and Queens of Carnival, so we decided to stick around for a bit. What a great idea that turned out to be. We stayed until the end, it was indeed such a beautiful show.
I would like to congratulate the Downtown Carnival folks on staging such a wonderful show. The people who were there enjoyed every second of it. The traditional Kings, Queens, the Pan, the Vintage Calypso were a joy to behold. At this wonderfully-produced show, there was a real tight flow; it was the old mixed in with the new as there were several big Kings and Queens costumes there also.
Whoever idea this was must be congratulated for this, also the producer of the show, who I understand from the house announcer, is one Mr English from the United Kingdom. Maybe the powers at be should look towards this young man for some fresh ideas as to how to keep people's interest in a show and not have it become long and boring.I hope that this would now become a permanent part of the Downtown Carnival programme Thank you to the folks for a truly beautiful evening.
