Melissa Doughty's recent article on noise pollution was very informative. Dr Varma Deyalsingh's comment that, "some people just want the peace and quiet of their homes to get away from the mad rush of the world, the pressures of their workplace, the lawlessness of the road, the streets filled with crime and the failure of government institutions to ensure such would only add to the mental stress people have to face daily."
The EMA spent a lot of money on advertisements about access to its noise police but I can assure you I was still bombarded with loud music this Carnival weekend, more so than last year. As Dr Deyalsingh stated, we are lacking in basic courtesy to one another and the failure of implementation of laws and services which we expect from the state is not forthcoming. If firecrackers are illegal how come so many places are selling them?
I think we need some dedicated nationals to save us. The opposition and government members of Parliament are two sides of the same coin. But we have hope.Thank God Justice Carmona is to be our new President. I sincerely hope he would give us a new cadre of independent senators who are in sync with the needs of the ordinary man and who would bring private motions to Parliament to assist us. We need King Carmona and his knights to rescue our nation.
