For the past few months the disposal of rubbish by a coffee shop in St James has become a health hazard. This establishment puts garbage bags in the drain outside their doors thereby creating an easy meal for rats.Every time you pass by the corner in the night you can hear these rodents before you see them.
First there is a rustle of the bags, then you see the inside of the bags moving and lastly you see these huge rats, three, four and often more, fighting over these meals that this establishment has provided for them. This scene is utterly disgusting. Being a well-known establishment one would think that they would dispose of their rubbish in a more hygienic way.
What makes the view even more disturbing is that another well-known ice-cream shop and a fast-food outlet, opposite to this coffee shop, actually put their rubbish, not by their shop but by the coffee shop's garbage, further adding to the unhealthy and disgusting sight. And all this happens right on the main road every evening from around 7 o'clock.
The public health authorities need to investigate this matter and ensure that these establishments dispose of their rubbish in a safe and hygienic way.
