What a reactive society we are. It takes a terrible accident for us to recognise the dangers on our roads. A walkover at any point on the Beetham highway is obvious if our citizens intend to use them, but one would hardly be enough. What about all those crossings further along the highway?
The minister should be proactive and take a drive down to Chaguaramas on the weekend. Our boardwalk was put in place with an apparent lack of thought for the safety of citizens; it would surely have been quite simple to make the car park where the main road is and have the road pass around where the car park has been built.
Another safety issue is the way our emergency services exert the power of their sirens on the highways. We have an emergency lane on most highways but what do we do? We drive down the middle of the highway, sirens blasting, leaving the emergency lane empty. Our Prime Minister must insist that her Cabinet get out on the road and see the nonsense that passes for Trini behaviour.
Our schools must train pupils to use the pavements and respect others' right to free passage. We don't want a situation where every school has a walkover at its entrance. As we continue our development by distributing lap tops, etc., an effort must be made to teach common sense.
I appeal to the Government to show us what they can do and not wait for the next election to promise us what they will do.
