I have read and seen the euphoria over the election of the new Pope, all ga-ga over the fact that he is not from Europe but from the Americas. At first there was speculation that someone from Africa, Asia or America would be chosen, then that the Holy Spirit would inspire the Cardinals. If that was really so, why not on the first ballot?
Anyway, the fact that this Pope was born in Argentina does not change the fact that he is Italian and that was the guiding factor in his choice since the Roman Catholic church began in Rome and no one but an Italian should be Pope. Those others from Africa and Asia were just illusions; there was no way anyone other than of European descent would be chosen.
