While we applaud the Prime Minister's prompt response to the escalating imbroglio surrounding the now ex-minister of national security, we note with some concern that while this was a matter that has been brewing for some time, it appears that no real consideration was given to the possible worst-case scenario.
The knee-jerk appointment of now former works minister, Emanuel George, as an interim office holder to the now vacant post underscores this, and his lack of any real credentials to deal with what is realistically the most troublesome of issues on the national agenda is worrisome in the extreme. The Government in general and the Prime Minister in particular, may need reminding that they were voted into office in no small part on their promises of plans to halt the scourge of violent crime and to this must the conversation be refocused.
In this regard it is worth mentioning that moving forward requires a firm hand on the national security wheel and it may well be the most prudent course of action that the Prime Minister herself assumes responsibility for this ministry until a suitable candidate can be found.
This would send a clear and unambiguous message to all stakeholders and the public alike that the issues of the day continue to be more important than politics and would offer continuity and direction at the highest possible level as we continue to treat with this urgent and pressing matter.
