I should be grateful if you permit me space in your newspaper to express sincere appreciation to the Ministry of National Security, the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force, the Trinidad and Tobago Fire Services and the National Security Officers Foundation for their hosting of events to mark the 25th Anniversary of the Camp Omega explosion.
On April 26, 1988, T&T experienced the loss of the highest number of security personnel in a single incident. My father, firefighter Earl Moore was one of the men who lost his life that day. Together with the families who lost loved ones and those who survived the incident, I, at the age of seven, would experience an unspeakable hurt and pain that dreaded day.
In my adult years, I would search the gazettes every year for an article relating to the incident or an advertisement in memorial but nothing I would find. This year, I re-lived the old adage of "better late than never" and I wish to share my gratitude to the men and women who worked to ensure that this year would pass differently.
To the survivors, I did not know of you until this week. I do hope that some one of our esteemed journalists would do a feature story on you one day and likewise a feature on the incident. To other families and my own family, may God continue to bless us with peace and a sound mind all of our days that we may always hold dear the memories of these men.To the men and women working in service to our country, may you walk with Almighty God always and may he look over you and your families daily.
A grateful daughter
Earlann Moore
