I am writ­ing as a res­i­dent of the St Joseph con­stituen­cy to ex­press my con­cern over what may be ev­i­dence or co­in­ci­dence of a dis­turb­ing con­spir­a­cy in­volv­ing key gov­ern­ment rep­re­sen­ta­tives and pos­si­bly the head of gov­ern­ment. My con­cern re­sults from the e-mails pre­sent­ed by Dr Kei­th Row­ley dur­ing his no con­fi­dence mo­tion on Mon­day.

It is fright­en­ing to think that this is the way the gov­ern­ment con­ducts its busi­ness and deals with chal­leng­ing sit­u­a­tions. The al­le­ga­tions of of­fer­ing pro­mo­tions to peo­ple to get favours, threats of tak­ing away busi­ness from me­dia hous­es, de­fam­ing peo­ple and wire tap­ping in­de­pen­dent of­fice hold­ers are ter­ri­fy­ing.

It would be dev­as­tat­ing to think that our St Joseph mem­ber of Par­lia­ment Her­bert Vol­ney was used as a scape­goat for the Sec­tion 34 fi­as­co. Af­ter be­ing fired from his min­istry and be­ing left as MP with­out the sup­port of his par­ty, the con­stituen­cy has suf­fered tremen­dous­ly.

An­oth­er point that hit me like a full bus was the deroga­to­ry lan­guage used in these e-mails to de­scribe the woman in ques­tion. I can­not be­lieve that any pub­lic fig­ure would view a woman in this way. Un­less we see each oth­er as equals and treat each oth­er with the re­spect we would like for our­selves and fam­i­ly mem­bers, our so­ci­ety is go­ing to suf­fer.

For the record, I would like to think that there was some mix up with these e-mails and this is not the be­hav­iour of our gov­ern­ment. How­ev­er, if these e-mails are au­then­tic, the of­fi­cials in­volved should re­sign and do some se­ri­ous in­tro­spec­tion. The cit­i­zens of this coun­try con­tin­ue to hope that when our lead­ers cam­paign on change that it will be change for the bet­ter.
