I must laud the government for their appropriate naming of the recently opened SAPA facility. The late Sundar Popo was an icon for not just chutney, but the East Indian influence in our country's culture. He, in a beautiful way, managed to inter-marry two very separate genres–chutney and soca, in a way that made the Caribbean experience more exciting and in some cases amusing.
Popo's work has of course inspired many international artistes, the most popular of them happen to be the late Kanchan–an Indian singer. She has done over his songs and added to their popularity and upbeat tempo. It is very satisfying to know that the legend was appropriately honoured. What this move seeks to do is to highlight an appreciation for diversity and culture in our people.
As a southerner who grew up listening to his tunes, it is a great pleasure for me to see this monument as attribute to Popo's great legacy.
