Condolences to all those that have lost their loved ones. While I am in total agreement with those who are calling for more policing of the entertainment areas, I want to know what is being done to enforce our traffic laws.Surely it follows that if when someone is perfectly sober, traffic violations occur, then certainly when someone is under the influence of even one or two drinks of alcohol those same violations would happen.
How many of our drivers appreciate that it is against the law to talk on the phone while driving? How many appreciate the danger of driving with the distraction of loud music?Breaking the traffic signals is not a matter of playing "chicken"; it's a matter of causing accidents. How many of our citizens know that the speed limit on the foreshore is 80 kph and that it changes to 50 kph after the traffic lights at Cocorite?
Are all of those "emergencies" that are broadcast by sirens and dangerous driving really emergencies? What if the police simply followed them to their destinations and determined whether or not it was necessary to speed at all?Do our members of Parliament recognise that if they allow themselves to be held up in traffic they would be in a better position to implement traffic controls?
More policing is required in so many areas not to frighten citizens into positive action, but to enforce the laws that are already in place.
