"My Government is not under threat and will not fall." Those were the words spoken by Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar in April 2012. Given how her Government is performing, she would be wise to keep those words close to her heart. The people of T&T voted out the PNM because of corruption and mismanagement of our financial affairs. The current People's Partnership Government finds itself mired in a mountainous morass of questionable legislation, poor Cabinet decisions and horrible governance.
From day one with the Reshmi Ramnarine affair to the present hundreds of millions of dollars spent but unaccounted for in the recent Auditor General's report, the entire Cabinet seems to be feeding at the trough. The dismissive wave of the hand by former minister of national security, Jack Warner, that if he had to spend $6 million again to pull a firetruck out of a ravine, he would do it without hesitation, speaks volumes about the Government's approach to managing the Treasury.
The Section 34 debacle still lurks in the background, e-mailgate is frightening to even consider its ramifications notwithstanding the government's counter punch, the firetruck debacle and now the public is hearing about another Cabinet decision to purchase land in Couva valued at around $45 million for close to $180 million; $180,737 was paid for funeral arrangements for one, yes one person.I hope that was for the late Sir Ellis Clarke's funeral. The writing is on the wall for this Government! The irony is that the Opposition does not look too hot either.
