Together we achieve
It is quite obvious that there is a Trini versus Trini epidemic plaguing our nation. We have been conditioned to believe that it’s all about “me, myself and I.” One must ask, do we really want to help each other and fight oppression as a cohesive society? It hurts and disturbs me that some of my fellow sons of the soil as well as daughters posses “a crab in barrel” attitude. Whatever happened to the days of empowering and uplifting each other to achieve success? T&T achieved Independence 51 years ago. From then to now our country can be dubbed as one of the most successful in the Caribbean. We have produced talented sportsmen, brilliant scholars and other highly decorated public figures.
These successful individuals, in my humble opinion, truly believe in the country’s watchwords Discipline, Tolerance and Production. They believe in dedicating their time and energy towards personal success and that of the country. Their attitudes and behaviours are conducive to success. Brian Charles Lara is a living testament of this. At the tender age of six he started his journey at the Harvard Coaching Clinic and from there he worked tirelessly at developing his talent. His hard work and dedication has assisted T&T greatly and influenced many of the players of the popular and successful Red Force cricket team. The knowledge he imparts to the young cricketers is invaluable.
What is admirable about “The Prince” is his never-ending charity to the needy via institutions such as the Pearl and Bunty Lara Foundation. Brian Charles Lara is one of the most successful cricketers in the world but he is humble enough to give advice to his fellow sportsmen and more importantly assist the cancer struck and underprivileged in T&T. Parents need to reintroduce the watchwords to their children. These words cannot directly stop the killing and stealing today or tomorrow but it is a means by which better, positive attitudes can be portrayed. No law can be created to change a person's perspective toward a specified target and the way they say or do things.
Lara’s philanthropy stemmed from his mother’s positive and charitable behaviour, which was instilled in him from a young age. Parents and teachers need to allocate time for educating their children about the struggles that their ancestors faced. Trinidad is a relatively easy place to become successful once the required commitment and hard work is facilitated by the individual.
The time has come to stop fighting among ourselves. “Sweet Sweet T&T, all ah we is one family.” Together we aspire, together we achieve.
