Call by-election in San Fernando East
It seems that we are in a season of by-elections. Whereas we have just come from the Chaguanas West by-election, and we now have a St Joseph by-election on the horizon, why aren’t any of the zealous election-hungry groups calling for a by-election in the San Fernando East constituency? Only recently, Mr Manning was granted yet another sick leave extension from the Parliament.
As a matter of fact, since the Speaker apparently has the power to declare a seat vacant, based on a request from the leader of a party in the House, as is the case of the Prime Minister and Herbert Volney, why is it that the San Fernando East seat is not being declared vacant? It is more than two years that Mr Manning has been on sick leave and collecting his salary as an MP as well as pension as a former Prime Minister, but Herbert Volney loses his entitlements right away.
Why doesn’t Keith Rowley write the Speaker? After all, isn’t Dr Rowley the leader of the PNM? How is this being allowed to happen? Nothing from His Excellency the President, Jack Warner, Fixing T&T, Nalini Dial or Ancel Roget. I fail to see any rationale for not dismissing Mr Manning on the grounds of ill health. Moreso, no one seems to have the temerity to bell this insipid cat.
In this season, when everyone is calling for the resignation of their MP, from Toco to Cedros, why are people being represented by an empty chair? I read recently, that the San Fernando Corporation was seeking the interest of Mr Manning's constituents. On what grounds does a Congress of the People mayor seek the interest of a PNM constituency? Why has the PNM not assigned anyone to represent Mr Manning? This is clearly a case of good for the goose only.
I now call on the PNM to state its case in respect of Mr Manning's seat. They have to be more serious about good governance and take action. Just imagine, a whole party is still afraid of Mr Manning’s shadow and Keith Rowley isn’t strong enough to shake the handicap.
I wonder out loud if this was part of the recent discussions between himself and Mr Manning.
