Please grant me the opportunity to express a concern of mine that has been bothering me for years.First of all, my condolences go out to the family, friends and coworkers of security officer Mr Bert Clarke, who met his death in a very tragic and sorrowful manner.
For too long, the nation's security officers have been openly abused and exploited which can be outlined in a full page. I can give a few examples: excessively long working hours, at times 48 hours without relief, meals or a bath; minimum wages below the stipulated law; functioning out of their job spec, opening doors for customers; carrying messages; threatened with dismissal if they do complain, etc.
One ought to note when there is a crisis, injury or sadly, I may say, death at their place of work, this security officer stands alone to answer all the queries and he is abused verbally by his employers and those he was supposed to protect. No mention is made of the functions at his workplace mentioned above.I am calling on those caring employers to put this wrong right. It is not too late.
