Having noticed that the general crime situation is fast developing out of control. I would like to suggest that those serving senior politicians who really want to put a halt to our crime problems consider a plan of political unity. They could for instance, consider forming a temporary alliance of unity until the next election is called. I suggest they could name the alliance the United Alliance Political Emergency Party. The leadership could at present be shared equally between the Prime Minister and the opposition leader, Dr Rowley.
Compromise will have to be made in respect of political matters, in the interest of the citizens' safety and security.Matters such as the review of the death penalty re-introduction could be jointly re-considered in the interest of the population. The leadership of the police system too will also have to be rearranged, with perhaps not one, but two Ministers of National Security, bearing in mind two heads are better than one.
An agreement concerning the duties and deployment of police officers will have to be immediately formed. Policemen should not be allowed to carry out their duties by using cars. All policemen should undertake their duties by foot patrols, They should be allocated an area or community for regular patrols. The roster of duties should be changed six months. Cars should only be used by the higher-ranked officers.
A general reward scheme for information from the public should be set up with a direct link not to the police, but directly to the National Security Ministers, with recorded messages of information received. Finally judges should be elected by the public and the Chief justice should be made answerable to an independent body of citizens every quarter in respect of the outcome of judgments made in cases of corruption and other serious crimes.
This may sound like a rather strange idea, but I believe, we urgently need some immediate changes to our political methods of administration, based along similar lines, if our politicians really want to avoid the growth of more corruption, murders and serious crimes here.
I hope this letter may give some ideas to our politicians who read it about what perhaps is urgently desired, in order to bring about some relief of public anxiety, help to curb the rate of crimes, and bring about a more secure environment and a fairer view of our method of justice.
