How do we hope to control crime if we do not start by trying to control the drivers on the roads of our country?I was travelling to Chaguanas from Port-of-Spain Sunday morning after 9 o'clock, and maybe five to ten cars which were travelling in my same direction were driving at the allowed speed of 80 km per hour. The majority, however, were speeding, doing over 120 km, and many were driving at 150 and over. These included pick-up trucks and heavy trucks. Many were changing from lanes, speeding through traffic to overtake other cars, and in doing so creating terrible dangers for other drivers! Why can't the country control this situation?
What about the CCTV cameras we were told that were going to be installed? These drivers who have no respect for the laws and other citizens should not have the right to use the roads, and this will be the first step to control crime as well. There is nothing more educational than finding yourself having to pay thousand of dollars or to lose the usage of your driver's permit, or even to find yourself in a situation in which your car is impounded. The penalty should be extremely severe and it should also involve the insurance companies which should increase the premiums for drivers who don't respect the law and who get fined or detained for moving vehicle violations.
