Where do we look for leadership in our nation? Is there a possibility that one day we will be united under the leadership of a political party that is concerned more with uniting our nation than staying in power? Can we ever achieve any semblance of unity when we continue to divide our various cultures?I suggest that this can only take place if our leaders (the President and the Prime Minister) are dedicated to the one cause of uniting T&T.
Dr Williams led the way by removing the words nigger and coolie from our vocabulary but we have replaced them with African, Indian, Syrian, etc, and successive Governments have propagated this division by introducing individual holidays to appease in the hope that they will remain in control. If our present Prime Minister is serious about the holders of public office maintaining certain standards then surely those standards must be taught in schools, offices etc. In fact, all citizens should be expected to behave in a "T&T" manner.
As we move towards Election 2015 let us demand of our politicians that they outline the path to unity. Education, education, education must be the order of the day. Not only in the building of schools but in the transformation of family life as a means toward teaching discipline, hygiene and self-examination, and the expected results if these are not adhered to.
