In recent times at award functions, graduation ceremonies etc, Muslim women have been seen refusing to shake hands with men.Unfortunately, it is proclaimed as a religious duty, which in fact can no way be substantiated from the supreme law of Islam, the Holy Qur'an.In fact the Holy Qur'an proclaims in chapter 48 verse 10: "Those who swear allegiance to thee do but swear allegiance to Allah. The hand of Allah is above their hands."
In this context, if Muslim women desire from a personal conduct not to shake hands with men then that is their right, but it should not be peddled as a religious dictum that contradicts the Qur'an.At a national award ceremony the recipient of the award is in fact swearing allegiance to the Republic of T&T, for the work she has done for the benefit of her country.
