The Prime Minister needs to show leadership on the issue of gay rights and stop passing the buck by asserting that the issue is not one for the Government but for the people through a referendum. It is one thing to say it is not legally possible to pass legislation to protect the civil rights of every citizen. It is another thing to abdicate the Government's responsibility to protect all its citizens from discrimination.
This is not an issue of morality. It is about the constitutional protections of a minority group. If we wait on the majority to protect the minority from discrimination, it would be like waiting on the fox to protect the chickens. Consider where African Americans would have been today if a civil war wasn't fought to protect the union from the south and end slavery.
Every minority group, from women to African Americans to the LGBT community, have had to rely on legislation to gain equal rights or protect their civil rights. The gay community will only receive equal protection under the law through legislation–certainly not through the Catholic Church–because this is a legal issue, not one of morality.
