My country continues to be one of the most lawless in this hemisphere, but what disturbs me even more than this fact is the way citizens at large seem to have simply accepted this tragedy that has befallen us.Is it that 50 years ago Dr Williams decreed that we were somehow different to other countries and law enforcement was not necessary for us?
The floodgates were opened since then and now littering, loitering, jaywalking, illegal vending, squatting, traffic offences and crudity on our roadways and eventually illegal (PH) taxis and noise pollution have become the norm. All the while those responsible for law enforcement have become proficient at making excuses and verbal acrobatics, and it seems that very few of our citizens understand that this failure is at the heart of the crime wave that now threatens to destroy this place.
All our experienced journalist, our intellectuals (especially from UWI) and our various commentators, talk show hosts etc, must be aware of the simple fact that if law enforcement administrators are unwilling or incapable of dealing with issues like noise pollution, littering etc, they are obviously out of their league to address violent crime. This is not rocket science.
Why then is this issue just being given mere lip service? I am fed up of living in a lawless country and I wish to make it clear to these administrators that by their failure to perform they are as much a menace to this society as the law breakers themselves. And all those silent intellectuals should also join the menace line.
