Papa Bois Conservation posted a picture of a river filthy with plastic bottles and food containers with the tag: "We want the separation of waste and recycling that we were promised."Since when are we such a nanny state that someone has to walk behind us to prevent us throwing rubbish in the drains? How does providing us with separation of waste and recycling help this when people cannot be bothered to use the trash receptacles that already exist?
What we – and I have been saying for years now–is a plastic bottle deposit, because if each bottle in that picture was worth 25 cents to a scavenger, there would be no bottles in that picture, none. What we also need is people to start getting arrested and charged for littering, but that is for another discussion.
Right now put the responsibility for this disposable convenience right back where it belongs, on corporate T&T, who can easily afford to pay the 25 cents to clean up after themselves on the $5 bottles of water and $6 bottles of soft drink.
