In politics, popularity ebbs and flows and with it the harsh reality of becoming irrelevant, almost overnight.Former Prime Minister Basdeo Panday can or should attest to that observation which is something that another former prime minister, Mr Patrick Manning, should be cognisant of.The PNM has a new leader and even if it is painful for Mr Manning to bear, he must respect this reality while realising that unsolicited intrusions are unwelcome and disrespectful.
A good leader is one who can follow as well and of this Mr Manning should be advised. As prime minister he served the country to the best of his ability and for this he has earned our respect. However, the time has come for him to retire gracefully from the arena he appears to so passionately cherish.Dr Rowley and the party's new leadership cannot afford internal or external perceptions to suggest that they are not constitutionally in charge, not even for a moment.
To retire quietly with dignity intact, would be a monumental gift from Mr Manning to those whom he had the opportunity to serve.Mr former prime minister, please give this to us for Christmas.
