The people of T&T have been subject to a political roller coaster since the People's Partnership Government has taken office. The Minister of Justice, the Minister of Sports, the Minister of the People among others were fired or forced to resign and now the Attorney General and the Speaker of the house both have serious allegations at hand.Public confidence is likely to be at the lowest in history. We are looking at allegations pointing towards the perversion of justice at the highest levels.
The office of Attorney General and Speaker of the House were intended to be independent offices with separation of powers being a critical part of our democracy, for obvious reasons, as outlined in the Constitution and are supposed to uphold the public interest.
What a sad and disturbing time in our country's history when the perception is that high-ranking officials continue to be a law onto themselves. Section 34 was a slap in the face of the public and the justice that was meant to be dealt out equally to all members of the public.
While the People's Partnership seems to be concerned primarily with public relations the country is in need of good governance. This turbulence is in desperate need of some sober and committed decisions that will benefit our children and our children's children.
We look forward to seeing if the Attorney General in particular will do the honourable thing in the interest of country and resign until these allegations are cleared. I believe that we are not in a good place when the public is regularly questioning the actions of the person holding office as Attorney General. If ever we were in need of change, I believe that time is now.
