It was indeed one of the most pleasant experiences to walk into the San Juan market on Monday morning to view the new modern facilities or as one vendor, Mr Gibbs, described it as a "first-class market." He has been a vendor in the San Juan market for over 20 years. Indeed a new national standard has been set as this type of facility is the first of its kind for T&T.
The meat vendors are housed in an air-conditioned facility with meats being displayed in glass front refrigerators. This is a much-needed step in the right direction according to health standards for having meats on display for sale as we see in the leading supermarkets.
The signage of the stalls already set up in this new facility were also welcoming and pleasing to the eyes. The market was clean.
The second building across the street which has vendors of fresh produce is housed in a well-lit and ventilated, spacious area.
The market felt safe and welcoming and although as a neighbouring resident I usually do not shop at the market, I now feel safe and motivated to shop here with my family.
This will definitely allow us to save on the significantly higher prices paid for meats and greens in the supermarket. The New San Juan Market now being able to offer similar shopping conditions and ambiance will attract some of the supermarket meat and greens shoppers like myself.
It is my anticipation that the SJLRC will be diligent in maintaining the high standard that has been set so that we can enjoy this convenience for many years to come.
