I hope that the electorate has learned a lesson where our politics are concerned. Many citizens thought that the election of a woman prime minister would bring about the desired changes needed to put the country back on the right path.
Those sensible members of the population must by now realise that we have taken one step forward and two backwards and we are back to square one.
Generally speaking, the PP has made very little difference to what goes on in this island with regards to politics, accountability of public money or the overall living conditions of ordinary citizens of this nation. In fact, some aspects of things have become worse.
Corruption has taken off at a galloping pace. Our police system and its force are now lying in the gutter. The murder rate has remained constant and despite police statistics, crime is on the increase. The continual bickering and stabbing in the back by politicians have reach a new height.
The already rich have become richer and the ordinary citizens have become poorer. The black clouds hanging over places and the people in certain places are still there. There are also signs that other districts are on the brink of joining them.
We are landed with an unfinished highway costing and arm and a leg, missing public monies and our established infrastructure remain in need of serious and urgent repairs.
Basic facilities such as medical, schooling, social welfare and provision of potable water still is in need of redressing. The present government has only one mark of merit to support their existence, and that is the provision of more homes which are being built at an unbelievable rate. The question however, remains. How long will these quickly-built, properties last?
The electorate must stop electing politicians on racial lines or on how rich they are. They must in future pay more attention to the background, honesty, morals and compassion and especially their connection with corruption.
They must disregard the offer of promises which are never fulfilled. If they fail to change their method of selecting members of our future governments they will only end up having more of the same for decades to come.
