The driving on our roads is becoming worse by the day. Witness those horrific accidents over the past weeks. While people tend to blame wet roads, faulty vehicles, etc, the real blame in my view rests with the failure of the traffic police to do their jobs effectively.
One recalls that the former minister of Works stated in Parliament that there were 15,000 traffic violations at the lights on Wrightson Road outside the Hyatt Hotel.
I would like to know how many of those offenders were charged. Probably none! Drivers act with impunity as they charge up the shoulder of the road and dip back into the flow of traffic and they do it more and more every day. On the road I use to come to work in the morning along the Western Main Road, about 10 vehicles do this every 10 minutes and there is never a policeman to stop and charge them for this.
I reckon that the Minister of Finance would be able to reduce the budget deficit by 25 per cent if only the police would do their job. Also, is it only coincidence that at least two mornings a week that a police vehicle, with only a driver, has to force its way through the traffic with sirens blaring?
