The Couva East Secondary RBC Young Leaders officially opened their Fitness Centre on April 15, 2016. Founded by the CESEC RBC Young Leaders, this venture culminated the Young Leaders programme for 2015/2016 based on their theme Health and Wellness, Mind, Body and Soul. The Young Leaders have recognized and observed that many students of the school are predisposed to many non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, hypertension and obesity. Also, many individuals, not only the students of the school but society, live unhealthy lifestyles because of unhealthy food choices and lack of physical activity. With this in mind, the CESEC Young Leaders, invested and built a Fitness Centre located on the school compound to increase the students' physical activity and to save lives by reducing the risk of contracting any of these diseases. The Fitness Centre will also remind students of their awareness to these diseases which can reduce their lifespan.
To promote their theme Health and Wellness, the Young Leaders also conducted an aerobic burnout on the school compound, promoted 'Water Week' by distributing water amongst students of the school, participated in the school's PTA walkathon informing the public of the benefits of eating healthy and living a healthy lifestyle. The unveiling of the Fitness Centre and the four equipment was cordially and specially done by Couva Sec's past student, Parliamentary Secretary for Ministry of Agriculture, Lands and Fisheries, Senator Mr Avinash Singh. The four weather resistant equipment includes: A double elliptical, a triple twister, a bicycle and an air walker which was donated by Senator Singh. The CESEC Young Leaders, their teachers, along with Senator Singh are proud of this accomplishment, as the Fitness Centre was their major aim and goal. This centre will be of benefit to the school population, parents, as well as individuals that visit the school.
