Last week, we read of two raids made by our law enforcement officers–one in Central and another in the San Juan area–where several women were detained.
Judging from what I read and where these raids took place, it is clear to see that this was not a church service. The thing is, those detained were not from Trinidad but from our Spanish speaking neighbours, who are at present residing here.
The flood gates have not yet been open where people can have easier access to our twin island and (I assume pretty soon it may be) we are now left to wonder what will be the outcome when it comes into being. The reality of job losses is a serious issue and it is no secret what some may resort to if that time comes; just read the recent headlines.
With all the positives as indicated by our Government, has anyone sat down and looked at the other side of the coin? Are we prepared to handle what can show up later? That can impact seriously on our society. We already have our issues to deal with, are we prepared to increase our already existing burdens?
This type of behaviour does not stop here but it opens the door for crimes of a different nature; it is like a domino effect. If we are not careful, we can be setting ourselves up. Yes, gaining on one hand and losing on the other. Is that what we want as a country?
