Mr B Joseph, in Thursday's Guardian, certainly makes a good point, (about reckless drivers). Just after the introduction of the speed guns, I drove from San Fernando to Port-of-Spain, on a Tuesday. It was as though I'd woken up in a foreign land.
All the drivers were obeying the speed limit. I thought, this is what happens when laws are enforced. People listen. Then this Sunday I drove from San Fernando to Port-of-Spain again. What a disappointment.
Very few drivers were keeping to the limit. In fact two, what would be termed "reckless" drivers, would have driven over me if they were able to–driving right up behind, menacingly forcing me to get out of their way. Both of these cars were old vehicles.
But almost every vehicle on Sunday morning was going in excess of the limit. We need more speed guns. We need more traffic police officers out and about at various times.
And, unless the ticketed people are habitual offenders, then the present fines should remain as a deterrent. I would, however, support fines commensurate with how much over the speed limit the stupid driver was going.
And, whilst we're enforcing laws, can we please do something about all the horrible, indiscriminate buildings being put up everywhere.
