Recently I penned a letter with the opening statement that safety should be a priority in any human endeavour. As motorists, have we ever pondered the devastating effects of a simple act of indiscretion? Are we just performing our duties on the roads bereft of the accompanying responsibilities? Has the almighty dollar taken over the reins and wreaking havoc on the human psyche?
Those are but just a few of the questions and concerns that were provoked by that preventable and lamentable accident at Claxton Bay that involved the trailer truck. Careless, negligent and insensitive best describes that driver and I dare say he should be punished in accordance with the law.
There are clear signs that state the clearance of the overpasses. Was any measurement taken before he started his journey? Had he killed those soldiers and others what would have been the rallying cry?
What about the untold hardship and hours of agony he brought to bear on other motorists and passengers? Have any of those trailer truck drivers been ticketed for speeding? Observe them carefully on the highways. They are a very menacing sight!
The Christmas season is upon us and with that comes the movement of more trailer trucks. I am urging the owners of trucking companies, the truck drivers, other motorists and sundry road users to be considerate and careful. Those human qualities are not beyond us. Please obey the highway code.
