Front page T&T Guardian, January 23: I am happy to read that this month, the Health Ministry intends to reduce the sugar put into school children's meals. Please reduce the size of the meal also, to stop our children from eating too much and becoming fat. A shame to read that T&T is rated, in some reports, as the third fattest county in the world after USA and Kuwait.
Can the canteens at schools, and the snack shops on the grounds of the PoS General Hospital be made to serve healthy snacks, like local fruit, almonds, nuts, raisins, fruit juices and coconut water? Snacks loaded with yellow dyes, sugar and salt should not be served either.
Fast food restaurants all over T&T could be visited by the Health Ministry to discuss cutting in half, the size of the meals and sweet drinks served. And the cost of these meals should come down also.
The 1,000 calorie per serving desserts served there, equal almost the total calorie intake allowed for a grown woman for one day. These types of eating habits along with the lack of daily exercise are causing illness, even in young children who are becoming overweight.
