T&T must expect better

Former prime minister Patrick Manning had a clear, decisive vision for the year 2020 with every possibility to fund it successfully as from a decade ago. With the intervening years and governments, T&T achieved unprecedented levels in national income and budget, yet the situation in 2018 reflects neither the Manning goals nor those levels of public expenditures during the period. A new slogan, “On the path to progress” is our latest assurance of positive dividends in the works: more random murders, more intense focus on domestic abuse, a sort of a new boat for Tobago, attending Commonwealth heads, etc. Parliament hosts a lot of ceremonial talk and passes laws in that vein while the Leader of the Opposition declares that what we really need is to keep walking forward toward a new peace accord. But we must expect better. Pan Trinbago is going through an overhaul because its own people realised they had to act on real reform. One can only hope they recognize and commit on two imperatives of persevering with integrity and helping develop pan’s reality. Let them admit its true full history, including pre-1940s and admit its manifold future national expressions apart from themselves.
