The Hindu Women’s Association (HWA) celebrated its 20th anniversary on September 22.

Guests attending the function at the Divali Nagar Site in Chaguanas were treated to entertainment by vocalist Neval Chatelal, and a fashion show displaying trendy Indian-styled tops for young men and women and Indian semi-formal wear. Dances were also performed by members of the Nrityanjali Theatre.

The HWA presented awards to Hindu women who have excelled in their fields over the years, including Pandita Indrani Rampersad, Brenda Gopeesingh, Raveena Sarran-Persad, Madame Justice Amrika Tiwari-Reddy and Dr Lakshmi Persaud.

Persad, author of Raise the Lanterns High, For the Love of my Name, Sastra and Butterfly in the Wind, and who delivered the feature address, is also the founder of the Lakshmi Persaud Research Fellowship at Warwick University’s Centre for Translation and Comparative Studies.

Also speaking were Eulalie James, Minister in the Ministry of Culture, Community Development and Gender Affairs and Kamla Tewarie, president of the HWA.
