It's considered 'hip' to go to "fete` after fete`", but it's not so 'hip' to let the body lack sleep because of feting. Medical experts and others all agree that sleep is essential to wellbeing at all times. Dr Neil Singh, Head of the Health Services Unit, UWI St. Augustine has advised before going to a fete the person should take what he referred to as a "power nap". If this is not done, he said, the circadian rhythm which is the cycle of sleep is interfered with, and when this happens it can lead to fatigue, sleep depression, blood pressure and cardio vascular risk.
Meanwhile, Brian Chin Leung, fitness trainer advised that a person needs sleep to have enough muscle power to fete properly. "When you are sleeping your body can concentrate on muscle fibre repair," said Chin Leung. It's like when you are 'walking it out' after an exercise workout - when you slow down and rest the effect of muscle fibre repair is enhanced," he said. Less sleep equals headaches, dizziness and other serious complications, so watch out as you 'rant,' rave and misbehave this carnival season.
