It was a day of fun for the little ones at the George Village Recreational Ground last Friday, when the Ministry of Education/Servol, in collaboration with the Nariva Early Childhood Association and the Parent Outreach Programme hosted their annual family fun day. Six ECCE centres around the district of Nariva participated in the event, which saw a good turn out by parents, teacher and onlookers. The children themselves were quite eager to participate in all events.
The participating schools included, Little Joy Childhood Centre, Navet, St Juliens, Ecclesville, Hindustan and Guaya United. The day kicked of with a lovely parade of the schools, which was viewed by Minister in the Ministry of Education, Clifton De Coteau. Some of the events included, eating race, roller race, hoola toss, airball and balloon popping races. The balloon popping race was loads of fun, and the eating race was equally as enjoyable. Who knew those small mouths could eat so quickly? The kite flying competition allowed father and son bonding as they co-operated in attempting to mount their kites.
But the day was not only fun for the children, the adults also indulged themselves in a fierce battle-the exhibition tug-o-war. This was an unusual event as ten men took on twenty women in two rounds of heavy rope pulling. The men, who asserted themselves as winners before the blow of the whistle, were comprehensively beaten by the women. The ladies had the men skating on the ground as they completed the two rounds. The women began chanting, "women is boss," and "look how them men crying," while one of the men sadly admitted, "I feeling really bad now."
The fun day also featured face painting and a bouncy castle, which was sponsored by De Coteau. All children received gifts whether they were winners or not. Emcee of the fun day, Kemraj Boodram of Sunshine and Sunshine Sports, said that for six years he has been at the fun day and it is one of the better events to date. "It is one of the more exciting events," he said.
